Human Design Authority: Your Complete Guide to Making Decisions You Trust

-Josefina Van Thienen
Person walking a path through nature — following your Human Design Authority

You know that feeling when you make a decision and something in your body just says "yes" -- a quiet certainty that has nothing to do with logic? And then there is the opposite: you make the "smart" choice, the one that checks every box on paper, and yet something feels wrong for weeks afterward.

That gap -- between what your mind thinks is right and what your body knows is right -- is exactly what Human Design Authority addresses.

In the Human Design system, your Authority is your personal decision-making compass. It is the specific way your body is designed to process decisions and arrive at clarity. Not how you think about decisions. Not how other people make decisions. How you are built to know what is correct for you.

Most of us were never taught this. We were taught to make pro-con lists, think things through logically, and ask everyone around us for their opinion. And while the mind is brilliant at gathering and analyzing information, Human Design says it is not your decision-making tool. Your body is.

This guide covers all seven Authority types in Human Design, how each one works, and how to practically apply yours to career moves, relationships, and life direction. If you do not know your Authority type yet, generate your free chart here -- it takes less than two minutes with your birth date, exact time, and location.

Why Your Authority Matters More Than You Think

Your energy type tells you how to engage with the world. Your strategy tells you how to approach opportunities. But your Authority tells you something even more personal: how to make the actual decision when a choice is in front of you.

And here is why that matters so much, especially for career and life decisions.

The mind is not your Authority. This is the foundational principle, and it goes against everything most of us have been taught. Your mind is designed to be an outer authority -- it is brilliant at observing, analyzing, and offering perspective to others. But when it comes to making decisions for yourself, the mind will talk you into and out of things endlessly. It weighs options, catastrophizes, people-pleases, and rationalizes. It is not where your truth lives.

Your body already knows. Before your mind starts its analysis, your body has already responded. A gut pull. An emotional wave. A quiet instinctive hit. A sense of willpower or the lack of it. These signals are your Authority speaking, and they are almost always more reliable than the mental chatter that follows.

Following your Authority reduces regret. When you learn to trust your specific decision-making process, the chronic second-guessing drops away. You stop asking everyone for their opinion on your career move. You stop agonizing over whether you made the right call. You start making decisions that feel solid in your body -- even when they do not make perfect logical sense.

This applies to every domain of your life. Whether you are weighing a career change, considering a relationship, deciding where to live, or choosing between two projects, your Authority is the filter that turns confusion into clarity.

Let's walk through each of the seven Authority types.

Emotional / Solar Plexus Authority

Who has it: Roughly 47% of the population. Any energy type can have Emotional Authority if the Solar Plexus (Emotional Center) is defined in their chart.

Emotional Authority is the most common Authority type, and it comes with a rule that will change how you approach every major decision: there is no truth in the moment.

How It Works

If you have Emotional Authority, you experience life through an emotional wave -- a natural cycle of highs, lows, and neutral points that moves continuously through your system. This wave is not caused by external events (though events can amplify it). It is a biochemical rhythm built into your design.

Because of this wave, any decision you make at the peak of an emotional high or the depth of an emotional low is distorted. The job offer that feels like the opportunity of a lifetime when you are riding high might feel very different two days later. The relationship you want to end in a moment of frustration might look completely different once the wave passes.

Your process is to ride the wave. Feel the excitement. Feel the doubt. Feel the neutrality. Check in with yourself at multiple points across your emotional cycle. The decision that remains consistent across the full spectrum of your wave is the one you can trust.

What This Looks Like in Practice

For career decisions: When you receive a job offer, do not accept on the spot -- even if every part of you is screaming "yes" in that moment. Say, "I would love to think about this and come back to you by date." Then sit with the opportunity for several days. Notice how you feel about it when you are excited, when you are calm, and when you are in a low mood. If the answer stays consistently positive across your emotional range, it is a genuine yes.

For relationships: Do not commit to or end a relationship in the heat of emotion. Give yourself time to move through your full wave before making a permanent decision. The clarity you find on the other side of the wave is far more reliable than what you feel in the peak or the trough.

For daily decisions: Not every small choice requires a full emotional cycle. Emotional Authority primarily applies to decisions that carry significant weight -- career changes, financial commitments, relationships, moves. For everyday choices, notice your emotional state and lean toward deciding when you feel relatively neutral.

The Key Lesson

"Sleep on it" is literally your strategy. What the rest of the world calls indecisiveness, your design calls correct process. Give yourself full permission to take time with decisions. Any person or opportunity that cannot wait for your clarity is not the right fit.

Sacral Authority

Who has it: Generators and some Manifesting Generators who do not have a defined Solar Plexus. Only Sacral types (those with a defined Sacral Center) can have this Authority.

Sacral Authority is the body's most immediate decision-making system. It is visceral, instinctive, and fast. Where Emotional Authority says "wait," Sacral Authority says "you already know."

How It Works

Your Sacral Center communicates through physical sensations and sounds. When something is a yes for you, you feel a rising, warm, pulling sensation in your gut -- often accompanied by an involuntary sound like "uh-huh" or "mmm." When something is a no, you feel a contraction, a flatness, a pulling away -- sometimes with a sound like "unh-unh" or just silence.

This response is binary. It does not do "maybe." It does not do "let me think about it." It either has life force energy for something or it does not. And here is the important part: your Sacral responds to what is in front of you right now. It needs something to react to -- a question, a proposal, an opportunity, a person. It cannot generate answers from a vacuum.

What This Looks Like in Practice

For career decisions: When someone presents you with a new role, project, or opportunity, pay attention to what your body does before your mind starts analyzing. Does your gut light up? Does energy rise in your core? Or does everything go flat and heavy? That initial body response is your Sacral Authority speaking, and it is more reliable than any pro-con list.

A useful technique: Have someone ask you yes/no questions about the decision. "Does this job excite you?" "Do you want to work with these people?" "Does this salary feel right?" Binary questions unlock your Sacral response in a way that open-ended deliberation does not. Listen to the sound your body makes and the sensation in your gut, not the words your mind produces.

For everyday decisions: Practice with small choices first. What do you want for lunch? Does your body pull toward one option? Do you want to go to that event tonight? Notice the gut response before your social obligations override it. The more you practice with small decisions, the more you trust your Sacral with big ones.

The Key Lesson

Your body is faster and more accurate than your mind for personal decisions. The gut response that arrives in a split second contains more wisdom about what is right for you than hours of deliberation. Learn to catch it before the mind starts talking over it.

Splenic Authority

Who has it: People with a defined Spleen Center but an undefined Sacral and an undefined Solar Plexus. This is most common in Manifestors and Projectors.

Splenic Authority is the oldest and most primal form of awareness in the human body. It is your survival instinct, your immune system's intelligence, your body's sense of what is safe and healthy for you right now.

How It Works

The Spleen speaks in the present moment only. It does not repeat itself. It does not build over time like an emotional wave. It does not give you a loud gut sound like the Sacral. Instead, it communicates through a quiet, subtle knowing -- a flash of instinct that says "yes, this is safe and correct" or "no, something is off here."

Think of it as the hairs on the back of your neck standing up. A sudden, inexplicable certainty about a person or situation. A sense that you need to leave a room, take a different route, or decline an opportunity -- even though you have no logical reason to feel that way.

The challenge with Splenic Authority is that it is quiet. It speaks once and moves on. If you are not paying attention, or if your mind immediately overrides it with logic ("don't be ridiculous, this is a great opportunity"), you will miss it.

What This Looks Like in Practice

For career decisions: Trust the instant hit you get about a person, a company, or an opportunity. If you walk into a job interview and something in your body says "no" within the first thirty seconds -- even though the role looks perfect on paper -- honor that. Your Spleen is picking up on something your mind has not processed yet.

For relationships and partnerships: Notice your body's response when you first meet someone. The Spleen is particularly attuned to whether a person or environment is healthy for you. That immediate sense of ease or unease is real data.

For daily decisions: Your Splenic Authority works best when you act on it in the moment. Unlike Emotional Authority, you do not need to wait. The instinct you have right now is your truth. Waiting often means your mind overrides the signal.

The Key Lesson

Your intuition is not being irrational. It is being intelligent in a way your mind cannot replicate. The quiet voice that speaks once and says "this" or "not this" is your most reliable guide. Learn to hear it, trust it, and act on it before the mind builds a case for the opposite.

Ego / Heart Authority

Who has it: A small percentage of Manifestors and Projectors who have a defined Heart/Ego Center but an undefined Sacral, Solar Plexus, and Spleen.

Ego Authority is about willpower. Pure, honest, heart-centered willpower. It is not about what you should do or what makes sense. It is about what you genuinely have the will and heart to commit to.

How It Works

The Heart/Ego Center in Human Design governs willpower, self-worth, and the ability to make and keep promises. If this is your Authority, your decision-making process comes down to a single question: "Do I have the heart for this?"

This is not a metaphor. It is a physical, felt sense in your chest. When you genuinely have the will to pursue something, you feel it -- a rising determination, a solidness, a sense that you can and will see this through. When the willpower is absent, no amount of reasoning or external pressure will manufacture it.

What This Looks Like in Practice

For career decisions: Only commit to work you genuinely have the will to do. If you hear yourself making a promise -- "I will deliver this project," "I will take this role," "I will build this business" -- and something in your chest feels solid and sure, that is your Ego Authority confirming a yes. If you are making the promise but your heart feels empty behind the words, you will not sustain the commitment no matter how good the opportunity looks.

For negotiations and commitments: Listen to yourself when you speak about what you are willing to do. Your voice will carry conviction when your heart is in it. When you notice yourself hedging, qualifying, or rationalizing, your heart is telling you something is off.

For everyday decisions: Ask yourself plainly: "Do I want this? Am I willing?" Not "should I want this?" Not "is this a smart move?" Just: "Is my heart in this?" Your answer to that question is your Authority.

The Key Lesson

You are designed to follow your willpower, not your logic. When your heart is fully in something, you have extraordinary stamina and determination. When it is not, everything becomes a slog. Stop committing to things that do not genuinely have your heart behind them.

Self-Projected Authority

Who has it: A specific subset of Projectors who have a defined G Center (Identity Center) connected to the Throat but no defined Sacral, Solar Plexus, Spleen, or Heart Centers.

Self-Projected Authority is about hearing your own truth come through your voice. Your clarity does not come from thinking things through alone. It comes from speaking and listening to yourself speak.

How It Works

Your Identity Center (the G Center) holds your sense of direction, identity, and love. When it is connected to your Throat, your truth has a direct pathway to expression. The act of speaking about a decision reveals what you actually want -- often surprising your own mind in the process.

This Authority requires you to talk things out. Not to get advice. Not to hear someone else's opinion. But to hear your own voice as it processes the decision aloud. Your tone, your word choice, your energy as you speak -- all of these contain information about your truth that silent deliberation cannot access.

What This Looks Like in Practice

For career decisions: Find a trusted person -- a friend, a partner, a coach -- and tell them about the opportunity you are considering. Ask them not to give advice, just to listen. As you speak, pay attention to your own voice. Do you sound excited, alive, pulled toward this direction? Or does your voice go flat, uncertain, strained? What you hear in your own expression is your Authority.

A useful framework: Talk about two different options to the same listener. You do not need them to compare the options for you. Just notice the difference in your energy as you describe each one. The option that brings life into your voice is pointing toward your truth.

For relationships: The same principle applies. When you talk about a person or a relationship, does your voice carry warmth and direction? Or does it carry confusion and flatness? Listen to yourself.

The Key Lesson

You do not find clarity by going silent and thinking harder. You find it by speaking your truth out loud and listening to what comes through. The right sounding board is someone who holds space for your voice -- not someone who fills the space with their own opinion.

Environmental / Mental Authority

Who has it: A rare subset of Projectors with no inner authority centers defined -- no defined Sacral, Solar Plexus, Spleen, Heart, or G Center connected to the Throat. Also sometimes called "No Inner Authority" or "Sounding Board Authority."

Environmental Authority is the most outwardly oriented decision-making process. You do not have an internal signal to follow. Instead, your clarity comes from your environment and from discussing decisions with a trusted circle of people.

How It Works

Without any of the traditional inner Authority centers defined, your decision-making process relies on two external factors: the places you are in and the people you discuss things with.

Different environments literally create different feelings and perspectives within you. A conversation you have in a quiet park might lead to a completely different conclusion than the same conversation in a crowded office. This is not fickleness -- it is your design. You are meant to notice how environments affect your sense of clarity.

Similarly, talking through decisions with trusted, consistent sounding boards allows you to process what is correct for you. As with Self-Projected Authority, the goal is not to collect opinions. It is to hear yourself and feel yourself in different contexts until the right direction becomes clear.

What This Looks Like in Practice

For career decisions: Before accepting a new role, visit the physical environment where you would be working. Meet the team. Sit in the space. Notice how your body feels in that setting. Does the environment support your clarity, or does it cloud it? This is not superficial -- for your design, the environment is a primary decision-making factor.

For major life decisions: Build a small circle of trusted people you can consistently talk through decisions with. These are not people who tell you what to do. They are people whose presence creates a safe, open space for you to process out loud. Over multiple conversations in different settings, your clarity will emerge.

For everyday decisions: Pay attention to where you are when you feel most clear. Some environments sharpen your thinking; others muddy it. Over time, you will learn which places support your best decisions.

The Key Lesson

Your truth does not come from inside in the traditional sense. It comes from the interplay between you, your environment, and the conversations you have. Instead of retreating inward to "figure it out," move outward. Change your setting. Talk to your people. Let clarity find you through the world around you.

Lunar Authority

Who has it: Reflectors only -- the rarest energy type, making up about 1% of the population. Reflectors have no defined centers at all in their chart.

Lunar Authority is the slowest and most contemplative decision-making process in Human Design. It requires a full 28-day moon cycle before arriving at clarity on major decisions. This is not optional or aspirational -- it is how your system is designed to work.

How It Works

Reflectors are deeply influenced by the transiting moon, which moves through all 64 gates of the Human Design system over a 28-day cycle. As the moon transits, it temporarily defines different centers and channels in your chart, giving you access to different perspectives, energies, and ways of seeing a decision.

On day three, you might feel completely certain about a choice. By day twelve, you might feel the opposite. By day twenty, a third perspective might emerge that you never considered. All of these experiences are valid data points. Your clarity comes from experiencing the full cycle and seeing which direction remains consistent across all of it.

What This Looks Like in Practice

For career decisions: When a career opportunity presents itself, commit to sitting with it for a full lunar cycle before deciding. Journal about it weekly. Notice how your feelings about the opportunity shift as the moon moves through your chart. The answer that threads through the entire cycle -- the consistent thread beneath the shifting perspectives -- is your truth.

For major life changes: Never rush. This is worth repeating because the world will pressure you to decide faster. Employers will push for an answer by Friday. Partners will want to know "where this is going." Friends will urge you to "just go for it." Your design requires a different pace. Give yourself the full 28 days, and let others know that this is how you make your best decisions.

For building self-trust: Track your decisions over time. Note which choices you gave a full cycle to and which ones you rushed. You will likely see a pattern: the decisions you honored with time turned out well, and the ones you were pressured into did not.

The Key Lesson

Your need for time is not indecisiveness. It is wisdom. In a world that rewards speed, your willingness to wait a full moon cycle before committing is a rare and powerful form of self-trust. Honor it.

How to Find Your Authority Type

Your Authority is determined by the defined centers in your Human Design BodyGraph. You do not need to figure it out manually -- any accurate chart will tell you.

Here is the quickest way to discover yours:

  1. Go to the Vera chart generator.

  2. Enter your birth date, exact birth time, and birth location.

  3. Your Authority type will be displayed alongside your energy type, strategy, and profile.

If you do not know your exact birth time, check your birth certificate or contact the hospital where you were born. Birth time affects which centers are defined in your chart, so accuracy matters for determining your Authority.

Once you know your type, scroll back up to your section in this guide and start practicing. The more you use your Authority consciously, the more natural it becomes.

Common Mistakes People Make With Their Authority

Understanding your Authority intellectually is step one. Actually following it -- especially when the mind disagrees -- is where most people struggle. Here are the mistakes that trip people up most often.

Letting the mind override the body. This is the most common mistake across all Authority types. You get a clear body signal -- a gut no, an emotional low that persists, an instinctive hit that something is off -- and then your mind starts building a case for why you should ignore it. "But the salary is great." "But everyone says this is a good opportunity." "But I already told them I would." Learning to trust body over mind is a practice, and it takes time.

Rushing decisions that need space. This is especially relevant for Emotional and Lunar Authority types, but it applies broadly. Pressure to decide quickly -- from employers, partners, society -- can push you into commitments that are not correct for you. Practice saying: "I need time to sit with this."

Asking everyone for their opinion. When you are unsure, the temptation is to poll everyone around you. But other people's Authority is different from yours. Their advice comes through their own filters, not yours. By all means, gather information. But when it comes to the final decision, turn inward (or outward, if you have Environmental Authority) to your own process.

Ignoring body signals because they are inconvenient. Sometimes your Authority says no to things you really want to say yes to. The job that pays well but makes your gut sink. The relationship that looks perfect but leaves your heart empty. The opportunity that everyone else is excited about but your instinct rejects. Honoring these signals is uncomfortable in the moment and correct in the long run.

Confusing the mind's fear with a genuine body signal. This one is tricky. The mind generates fear-based signals too -- anxiety about change, worry about what others will think, catastrophic thinking about worst-case scenarios. The difference is that body-based Authority signals feel centered and grounded, even when they are uncomfortable. Mental fear feels scattered, looping, and restless. With practice, you learn to distinguish between the two.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Authority in Human Design?

Authority is your body's built-in decision-making process. It is determined by which energy centers are defined in your Human Design chart. Unlike your mind, which analyzes and rationalizes, your Authority gives you a direct, body-based signal about whether a decision is correct for you. There are seven Authority types, each with a different way of arriving at clarity.

Can my Authority type change over time?

No. Your Authority is determined by your birth chart and remains the same throughout your life. What changes is your relationship to it -- as you practice listening to and trusting your Authority, it becomes easier to follow. Many people spend the first decades of life making decisions from their mind, and learning to shift to body-based authority is a gradual process.

What if my Authority and my mind disagree?

This is common, and in Human Design, your Authority takes precedence. The mind is designed to be an "outer authority" -- it is excellent at processing information and offering perspective to others. But for your own decisions, your body's signal is more reliable. This does not mean you ignore the mind entirely. Let it gather data and analyze options. Then let your Authority make the final call.

How do I know if I am following my Authority correctly?

The clearest indicator is how your decisions feel over time. When you consistently follow your Authority, you notice less regret, less second-guessing, and more alignment between your choices and your life experience. Your energy type's signature theme -- satisfaction for Generators, success for Projectors, peace for Manifestors, surprise for Reflectors -- also shows up more frequently when you are making decisions correctly.

Is Emotional Authority the same as being an emotional person?

No. Emotional Authority means your Solar Plexus Center is defined, which creates a natural emotional wave that influences your decision-making timing. It does not mean you are more emotional than other people. Every human experiences emotions. What is unique about Emotional Authority is that you need to ride your emotional wave fully before making major decisions, rather than deciding in a single moment.

How does my Authority relate to my strategy?

Your strategy and your Authority work together. Strategy tells you how to engage with opportunities (waiting to respond, waiting for invitations, informing, or waiting a lunar cycle). Authority tells you how to make the decision once the opportunity is in front of you. For example, a Generator with Emotional Authority would first wait to respond to something (strategy), then ride their emotional wave before committing (authority). One without the other is incomplete. Generate your free Human Design chart with Vera to discover both your strategy and your Authority type at hellovera.app.
